This is a complicated problem which is why the literature is confusing. Totals are easy: dissolve in HF, add xs B(OH)3 to combine with the HF, then use colorimetry. The alternative is alkaline fusion then XRF or colorimetry.

Perhaps there are spectroscopic methods to distinguish between the size fractions in the solid phase.
