Place the specimen in a 5% NaOH or KOH solution to clear the body. The abdomen can be punctured with a fine needle and subsequently the specimen gently massaged to expel some of the body contents. When the specimen is considered to be sufficiently transparent, it is placed in a test tube with a small volume of clarifying solution, consisting of lactic acid 85% (20 parts), glacial acetic acid (4 parts), phenol (2 parts) and distilled water (1 part). The tube is then heated in the same way as before until the liquid in the tube starts to circulate, which takes between 20 and 40 s depending on the volume of clarifier utilized in the tube.

Have a look on the protocol in the link below: http://www.thysanoptera.com.br/informacoes/detalhe/8/coleta-montagem (there is an English version as well)
NaOH 5-7% is good to eliminate thrips' body content. If you have plans to prepare permanent slides using Canada balsam, you should use clove oil before mounting to get better results. Good luck!
