SEM analysis was used to study the morphology of dried fruits could this be a basis for improved or reduced porosity? Rehydration test of samples revealed significant changes in water uptake in the samples.
Obafemi Obajemihi In the whole history of electron microscopy not more than a few hundred grams have been measured in total. It is highly unlikely that you’ll be looking at a representative sample. Why not use BET for SSA and porosity?
SEM actually told us about surface morphology and also about its roughness and smoothness. But for the actual porosity you can't use SEM should be use BET.
SEM can provide useful information on material surface properties, but it may not be the primary tool for directly quantifying or explaining porosity.Techniques more suitable for assessing porosity like; X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) Analysis, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) etc.
SEM can only provide information about surface properties of the materials. For exact measurement of porosity, one can use BET and mercury intrusion porosimeter but depends on the materials nature. For hard and solid materials BET is more useful but for soft and spongy materials, mercury intrusion porosimeter is always considered more useful.
SEM provide information about porosity but not exactly to measure surface area. BET is using for measuring the exact porosity and surface area. On the other hand, SEM is using for surface morphology.
