I am going through my first course in Virology and already I am aware of the enormous amount of subfields within virology. But I know that I must establish some sort of "base" knowledge before I can hope to get involved in serious research. Can someone recommend "key" concepts that I must first get my head around? Is there a "correct" chronological order to learn these key concepts?
Hello. I have a PhD in microbiology and did my thesis work in virology. I would recommend a good understanding of both the innate and adaptive immune systems in addition to viral replication as good starting points. From their it is easier to understand host-virus interactions, viral evolution, and viral epidemiology. Good luck!

Hello Jacob. Welcome to Virology! Honestly I am sure that in general, everyone who just started Microbiology would be overwhelmed with the huge amount of pathogens that they must study. I was too, and I am telling you that you are not alone. Take your time in learning the viruses one by one. Follow guidelines from Aimee, Yassine and Binod, because it is always good to have the normal innate and adaptive immune systems in mind, when you try to understand the mode of infection of the viruses. Refer to textbooks, before you proceed with review or research papers. All the best!
