I have conducted a survey experiment with two conditions. I want to research whether the perceived physical fitness influences the investment decision of the investor. In the survey I had one 'normal condition' and one 'physically not fit condition'. In SPSS that is: 1=Normal; 2=NotFit. The investment decision is: 1=Yes; 2=No. Is it possible to run a correlation analysis on this to see what the effect of the IV on the DV is? Or is this not possible?
Since you're correlating two dichotomous variables, you can do a phi coefficient analysis using the SPSS CROSSTABS option (ANALYZE --> DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS --> CROSSTABS --> STATISTICS --> Phi and Cramer's V).
My suggestion would be a binary logistic regression with investment decision as the DV. Full details for SPSS IMPLEMENTATION is most likely found by google search especially paying attention to the suggested videos. With best wishes, David Booth
Are the NORMAL and PHYSICALLY FIT conditions something that you randomly allocated respondents to, or are they responses they gave to question? If it is the former then the 2x2 chisq or logistic regression (or Fisher's exact depending on the margins, or lots of others), but if it is the later then like NO for finding if it "influences" the decision. There would be other (presumably unmeasured) variables related to both of these these. The procedures above would only measure the bivariate association.
