I did it with odd jobs, being a boat carpenter & painter, dishwasher for a year in large resort hotel, long stretches of unemployment with and without benefits, 4 years as a technical librarian, and decades of living with what has been essentially the complete support of a loving wife. Only now, through this RG platform, am I finally gaining some recognition for my work. I still have problems trying to publish. But at least I continue to pursue independent satisfaction of my curiosity. ;-)

Why not...you can perform your own research...if want grant from Institution must register yourself as a research centre if having facility to perform research following criteria for grant of same.

Absolutely! I have done independent research for many years.

But you will have trouble publishing in most journals as an independent researcher. Only a few minor publishers accept manuscripts from non-affiliated researchers. If you get a professor from any institution to look over your manuscript it might help, I did so once back in the days - but the paper were rejected anyway.

You can use your personal email address as your email and continue working on your own.

I have seen and met a lot of successful researchers on RG and real life that are independent, so it is possbile (and maybe recommended for some people, depending on their personality).

You can (and I have done so for many years), but it is more difficult to get funding and get results published in academic journals.

Brayan, there are lots of independent researchers out there who are not associated with any formally recognised institution and they are also publishing some great works. So, you can. However, the difficulties would start to surface when/if you decide to apply for research funding as funding bodies ask what institution applicants what institution they are affiliated with. These institutions also internally review grant applications before they are submitted. Good luck.

I have been working for a year as an independent researcher. The main difficulty I have had is finding financing for my projects.

The strategy I have followed is to contact professionals who work in conservation. And, who currently work in universities, research centers or legally constituted organizations. With them, I have prepared and presented: scientific articles and projects to obtain funds. Although, I still have no response from these funds, since they are recent applications. For the same reason, I cannot tell you that I have been successful in this regard.

Perhaps drawing up a medium-term plan, say 2 to 3 years, could help you. If you are meeting the goals and objectives that you set yourself, you will have the answer.

I can only speak from my own experience here, and what I have heard from others. I spent about two years between institutions between finishing my master's thesis and starting my PhD. During that period I found out, firsthand, that there are a lot of difficulties being an independent researcher. I was ineligible to apply for a lot of grants, and several museums I wanted to visit to gather data from the collections would not give me permission to visit until I begged my old lab P.I. to write me a letter of recommendation. This is despite the fact that the museums in question knew who I was and knew that I had visited the collections previously without any issue less than a year earlier.

Even then, they only let me visit mostly because I was still working with my old lab group during my gap year, so they treated me as if I were still a graduate student. In your case, you could get a recommendation from your old lab group, or you could use your current one, since you say you are a part of one just not in biodiversity. I don't think these institutions actually care what your lab group works on, they just want some confirmation that you are an academic.

I have also heard from a lot of other people that being an independent researcher makes it difficult to publish papers, though all the papers I published during my gap years were published as part of a larger group so I did not have any problems.

In many areas and disciplines, not just humanities, there are and have been independent researchers of true excellence. In entomology, for example, many of the best specialist taxonomists are still amateurs today, operating outside any institutional setting. Certainly from the point of view of seeking funding, being an independent researcher represents a serious handicap...

I have been an unaffiliated pure researcher for decades, Brayan David Aroca Gonzalez.

In many respects, I have suffered from lack of colleagueship and institutional support. On the other, I have been free to do my work without distracting duties related to teaching, somebody else's research, or writing grant proposals. I have required solitude and time to do the work only recently being shared at Research Gate. But it has been very hard as a loner to get published. Publications with the support of a good institution would put more food on your table, so to say.

Stephen A. Langford Thank you for your response. Certainly, it is a hard way, if one doesn't have an extra income. Then, that is the first step in order to become an independent researcher: to obtain a minimal income to live, then in parallel, work on your dream.

Patricio Pellet you are somehow right because everything is changed into a business nowadays. Even the only artwork can be successful that can make money even if it is rubbish. So, if you think that your research can make money then invest in it and if it cannot and you are still interested in it then just do it for your own heart. Who knows? maybe someone in some centries later picks it up and mention you.

we also work on biodiversity (plant sciences). We'll just work in the field and get the data. And in the laboratory we do the analysis (for example, herbarium and plant seeds).

A researcher must have a desire and the mental strength to go a long way to be the tool for well being of society. Unfortunately, we are restraining into laboratories and the findings there are getting identified as the results of an investment. But research is the output of exercise which could be achieved everywhere. Hence no need for affiliations in broader understanding.
