Can pure, non-doped chitosan exert an antibacterial effext?

Many papers are dealing with the antibacterial properties of differently doped/loaded chitosan films, and many others talk about dissolved chitosan. I've also been reading about chitosan gel used in wound dressing.

BUT: is chitosan itself an antimicrobial polymer? can a chitosan film reduce adherence or stop the growth of bacteria?
