The melting point decreases with decreasing particle radius. Reactivity increases. The width of the plasmon line of silver nanoparticles is increased. These changes are called size effects.

It is known that the Quantum Confinement effect of charges in material is deeply related to the bohr radius of excitons. When the dimension of material is closed to the bohr radius of excitons, the degree of freedom in the material is limited in that axis [e.g., x, y, z axis]. Following equation tells the relationship between bohr radius and effective masses of excitons (electrons and holes).
Even though the metals such as Ag, Al, Cu, Pt etc. have very small enough bohr radius of excitons, they also show Q.C effect when the size of the dimension are closed to the bohr radius. (1~3 nm)

About tens of atom small, and 10-20 atoms is enough to get a gap in Vis-IR range. It can be used for photovoltaic, plasmonic metal nanoparticles has a good publication record in the area, however ultrasmall ones that works like semiconductors now are in the early stage of development, so its stability, for example, is questionable.
