We have observed that children and adolescents with sickle cell trait may present with acute pain similar to that of SCD in the absence of other obvious causes
There is an abundant literature concerning the association of skill cell trait and multiple co-morbidities including pain. Very unfortunately this has led to adverse effects such as promoting occupational discrimination and inflation of health insurance premiums. The truth is that conclusions were most often flawed, due to a combination of inaccurate diagnostic approaches and/or erroneous statistical considerations.
Actually, convincing associations have been established with only three complications (that do not include pain), i.e. exertional rhabdomyolysis and sudden death, chronic renal dysfunction (including hematuria and exceptionnally renal medullary carcinoma), and venous thromboembolism.
Thank you very much. I now that many literatures mention complications associated with SC trait, others classify these complications as definite, probable , or possible. However, none mentioned about pain. I think this issue needs to be investigated.
I think the previous answers should answer your question and you can see there are cases of symptoms at high altitude. In the U.S. there were reports that football players practicing strenuously in high heat could have symptoms with sickle cell trait, but leading hematologists in general do not feel this was due to the presence of sickle cell trait but simply the strenuous exercise and heat. players without sickle cell trait can exhibit the same symptoms.
Thank You all. Still I think ( based on our observations) that individuals with sickle cell trait may experience pain that is related to the condition. We have registered many individuals with sickle cell trait with different complications, but the main complaint is pain. It would be worthy if you take this in consideration in future work
Hello Meaad, have you found more research on this topic. I suffer from sickle cell trait and I have severe pain. I am looking to see if there are clinical researches being performed in this area.
