i am investigating ICT role in Pedagogy in Pakistan. Can i use TPACK for that, ans if yes, can i use it partly, taking several parts of the framework. thanks
I think before deciding on using three out of the seven parts of the TPACK framework, you also need to consider what's overlooked in the framework, so as not to further short change yourself. Here's a current article that unpacks the issue of Context that is overlooked in TPACK and its importance to ICT integration in lesson planning:
Firstly, in response to Deb - in using TPACK - I would suggest that context is implicit in the Pedagogical Knowledge component (a good teacher knows their students as part of their pedagogy) and also the Technological Knowledge component (a good teacher knows the various technology available to them). Secondly, I think it is more likely that you will narrow your focus to what it is you are investigating as it is very difficult to do justice to all elements of the model every time it is used. For example, in recent research I have tended to focus, as a mathematics educator on Mathematics Content Knowledge and Mathematatics Pedagogical Content Knowledge. The following research might be of some use.
Larkin, K. (2014). Restructuring a pre-service teacher mathematics education course to develop Mathematics Content Knowledge (MCK) and Mathematics Pedagogical Content Knowledge (MPCK). Paper presented at STEM 2014: STEM Education and our Planet: Making Connections Across Contexts, Vancouver, (July 12 - 15). Acknowledged as Best Paper Award at this conference. (Orcid Done)
Larkin, K. Jamieson-Proctor, R. & Finger, G. (2012). TPACK and pre-service teacher Mathematics education: Defining a signature pedagogy for Mathematics edThe ucation using ICT and based on the metaphor ‘Mathematics is a Language’. Johannes Zylka: i am looking for "Examining role of ICT in pedagogy". for this purpose TPACK framework is serving the indicators, but i dont need the relative variable associated with this framework, my purpose can be fulfilled by choosing TPK only. plz throw some light on it. Thank You
@Debra and @Kevin, your points made regarding context were making me think about my teaching situation at a university. The Bachelor Degree programs do not allow much time to 'know your students'. What are the observations made so far in applying TPACK for tertiary education?
It appears that the "context' of the learning environment within wihich TPACK is used sometimes limits the extent to which you can operationalize all the knowledge components. For example, a teacher may want to use a new programme that is suited to a subject but budget contraints for new software and hardware make this impossible. I can speak from my own current context. The upgrades to the Google sheets allow for really useful features but I cannot always use them because I am still running on IE 9, while IE 11 is what is needed in order to support such features in Google Sheets. When I enquired about when the upgrade would be done, I was informed that a Univrersity wide test has to be done wtih IE 11 to ensure it is compatible with the rest of the systems like Banner and Peoplesoft in the University before going live with it..
TPACK is a framework, meaning that it helps to identify what are the big components of work in a particular problem of interest. Here, the problem of interest is understanding the forms of knowledge teachers need to teach with technology.
Having said that, the role of the framework is to identify the parts for further study. It doesn't say which parts should be studied. That is, any given study might look at just one, two, or three. In other words, it's perfectly find to just look at just TPK if that's the important thing to pay attention to.
However, reading your description, it's hard to tell what you really want. In my experience, people often confuse what we meant by TPK (understanding how technology informs general pedagogical practices), and they really mean TPCK (the actual teaching with the technology to teach something).
As far as context goes, I think the most recent publication on context is worth a read. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/280776005
