I am wondering if syringe filters, meant to be used with liquid, can be used with air. As a possible problem, I can see a dry filter not adhering to the housing properly. At times, the rate of flow would be very low, perhaps nothing. Thanks.
All commercial syringe filters I know of are suitable for use with liquid or gas. They should be constructed in such a way that the gas cannot pass around the membrane and must therefore pass through. One issue you may have if you're running at very low flow rates is the dead volume of the tubing and the filter itself. The other issue is that the filter will provide some flow resistance which may increase as it collects materials from the filtrate. May not be problematic in your application but important to be aware of the possibility.
If you're not sure if your particular filters are up to the task, you can always call the technical support from the manufacturer to confirm that it's suitable for filtration of gasses.
As an example, we use this type of filter all the time in vac lines and on syringe pumps with no problems.
