How the colour of peace be green? It is always white. These awards are eye wash and mostly won through line up. Real workers never get the taste of these awards.
They motivate efforts to save the environment. Perhaps it will be fair if we equate the extent of the effect to the value of the award. These awards are just catalysts of change, they are not the direct effectors of change.
I believe that it will spread the message to keep our environment green and cool. Such awards recognitions to people and organisations and will motivate them to plan and implement more and more responsible activities for keeping environment protection.
Greenpeace states its goal is to --"ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity" and focuses its campaigning on world wide issues such as climate change, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic engineering, and anti-nuclear issues.
It uses direct action, lobbying, and research to achieve its goals.
Greenpeace is known for its direct actions and has been described as the most visible environmental organization in the world.
Greenpeace has raised environmental issues to public knowledge, and influenced both the private and the public sector
Green Peace awards (& prizes similar to them) are not effective in helping to save & protect our environment because they go either to an individual or to few persons somewhere who did environmentally-friendly activity while others, elsewhere, go ahead with unabated activities that cause harm to the environment. In other words, one builds & another destroys or one mantles & another dismantles which means staying in square number one without any moving up or forward.
To increase awareness is one of the ways either to protect or to utilize things. Green peace awards promote the awareness of how important and essential it is to protect nature and the environment and replenish it so that we get a sustained benefit. Places that are hit with perpetual drought, degradation and aridity is due to that lack of awareness and the absence of proactive measures from the society to protect the environment for continued healthy and friendly existence with nature.
Environmental issues cannot be solved by just a few organizations or individuals. It takes everybody. Education is one effective form to raise the awareness of environmental issues. But, this can take a long time and need a lot of patience. The Greenpeace rewards can be viewed as a token of appreciation for a specific organization or individual, who promote environmental protection. However, to really achieve the goal, it will be everybody's responsibility.
Because this awards and simmilar actuactions let to know what kind of methods, surveys, things (sometimes of limited dimension) can help to change the world
Theoretically, these awards should have a very good purposes and these are
Recognise and encourage good contributions towards generation of knowledge on environment and its protection from degradation.
The award function associated with this serves the purpose of spreading awareness on such activities amonst the people.
Many of these awards, have lost the credibility, because of politics creeping in the selection process.
If it is a question of prioritising allocation of money between (a) an actual project related to environment and (b) towards an award; I will definitely vote for the former one.
I'm sure- every effort is effective. Participating in these initiatives we can say "we", and it's very important, I think. Thanks to the general and universal efforts, we managed to get support in saving Reef (this Gorilla is a present), seals, tigers, protection forests near Moscow. Now we are fighting for the parks (wildlife) "Kologrivsky" and "Darvinsky", "Samara Luka", "Krasny Bor"(St.Petersburg).Green Peace, WWF, change.org unite people who think about our planet. I try to share all the initiatives with my students and friends.
