Nostalgia can be much more than a mood elevating technique used by your mind. In many cases nostalgia is no more than a cry for help!
When your subconscious mind finds your life changing in a bad way it sends you some good memories from the past in order to let you compare your past to your present.
In other words, your subconscious mind is trying to motivate you by showing you the two pictures side by side. We humans get motivated by rewards and also by pain avoidance.
When we find out that our current present is not that good compared to the happy past we used to live we might get motivated to fix things and to bring the happy moments back. (see also The power of negative motivation)
Nostalgia mostly occurs when you find out that your present life is no longer pleasant. When your mind discovers that your present is not as happy as your past used to be it might make you feel nostalgic in order to help you feel better.
In other words nostalgia can be described as a defense mechanism your mind uses to elevate your mood when it finds that you are not feeling that good. The more you become satisfied with your life the less nostalgia you will experience.

Nostalgia is a bittersweet longing for the past where a person keeps remembering old times, mostly happy ones, and as a result feels better.
Its completely OK to have good memories and to recall them whenever something reminds you of them but what's not OK is recalling these memories all the time in such a way that affects your present life.
While nostalgia isn't a bad thing still it can result in many problems if you didn't understand it correctly. Do you know why you sometimes feel nostalgic?

"Nostalgia is a sentimentality for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. The word nostalgia is a learned formation of a Greek compound, consisting of νόστος (nóstos), meaning "homecoming", a Homeric word, and ἄλγος (álgos), meaning "pain, ache", and was coined by a 17th-century medical student to describe the anxieties displayed by Swiss mercenaries fighting away from home. Described as a medical condition—a form of melancholy—in the Early Modern period, it became an important trope in Romanticism.
Nostalgia can refer to a general interest in the past, its personalities, and events, especially the "good old days" from one's earlier life.
The scientific literature on nostalgia usually refers to nostalgia regarding the personal life and has mainly studied the effects of nostalgia induced during the studies. Smell and touch are strong evokers of nostalgia due to the processing of these stimuli first passing through theamygdala, the emotional seat of the brain. These recollections of one's past are usually important events, people one cares about, and places where one has spent time. Music and weather can also be strong triggers of nostalgia.[citation needed] Nostalgic preferences, the belief that the past was better than is the present, has been linked to biases in memory."...
"The past is not just a foreign country, but also one we are all exiled from. Like all exiles, we sometimes long to return. That longing is called nostalgia" Quote from Dr.Tom Stafford.
My best days in life were when my parents were alive. No one on earth has loved me more than them so it is natural that I have a store of positive emotions from them & towards them. Every time I do not feel well, I go to the memory store to draw from it like a person who draws money from his/her bank account. So by nostalgia, I get better & then move forward with less fear and greater purpose. Mind you, we were a poor family during their lives but they worked very hard until they saw all of us (sons & daughters) becoming successful university graduates.
Nostalgia is a strange sense of belonging to the individual in his childhood and continues throughout his life and are affected by social and psychological factors. This is likely increased tenderness or lose depending on these factors.
Nostalgia usually occurs when we have problems at the present and then we try to get better thinking about the good moments in the past. For example, if you have persons that you love that are dying , as a balance you could try to dream about earlier moments of happiness. this causes no problems if you do not fail to adhere to reality. Thus, the nostalgia in moderation,as a defense mechanism, can be beneficial.
But it could be a cry for help if you have not strenght enough to adhere to reality You must have a postive mind, believing that you can succeed, because life is just in your hands. Just you command your destiny.
"The holidays have a way of bringing up fond memories that can warm your heart. But are there any actual health benefits to nostalgia? It's more than just a longing for the past, and as Anthony and Laci explain, these sentiments can be quite good for us."
