Atropine is an antagonist of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors located in end organs (e.g. heart) as well as in brain. While acetylcholine is released from the vagal efferent fibers, glutamate is the primary neurotransmitter for vagal afferent signaling to the nucleus of the solitary tract. Is there any evidence if atropine can also block vagal afferent signaling?
