I have divided the Brief COPE by Carver in two sub-scales of active-adaptive coping and avoidance coping based on the review of literature? Can anybody tell me whether it is feasible and how exactly to justify it?
I am not certain that I completely understand your question. But, here are some comments that may help:
1. Carver (1997; doi:10.1207/s15327558ijbm0401_6) claimed that his EFA, using 168 respondents, yielded 9 factors for the 14 scale brief COPE. However, he does allow that (pp. 98-99) researchers might have good reason to pick and choose among the 14 scales. Others (e.g., Meyer, 2001, doi:10.1023/A:1012731520781) have noted that 8 of the scales ostensibly tap adaptive behaviors and 6 tap maladaptive behaviors, so clearly other thoughts about partitioning exist.
2. If you don't have item-level responses, then of course you cannot factor your data to help make a case (whether exploratory factoring or confirmatory factoring). If so, then all you can do is make a rational argument for why two subscales makes sense. However, if you do have the data, then running a factor analysis would be the preferred method.
