I am a 3rd year Biotechnology and Bioinformatics student. I have a keen interest in these research fields and want to publish a related paper. So I need some guidance and some topic under which I can work..
Hello Dear, hope you are doing great. firstly I would like to suggest please choose your major working area either biotechnology or bioinformatics as both are different aspect but yet interconnected well. Than go for some recent published article in 2013 (various filed)choose one the article or subject you find interesting to yourself and than check for available resource and further ask you mentor. I am suggesting some in which you add both biotech and bioinformatics Bio remediation, CADD, enzyme production and optimization, protein protein interaction network analysis, synthetic biology etc.
A very common question that come to every one's mind during his/her college life. My suggestion is that first you decide where you see your self comfortable either in molecular level (protein level) research or gene level research and many more. Go through your interest find the hot topics in trends and look for a better institute for your training purpose.
Its not all about paper publication its all about your dedication towards work and understanding level.
I agree with my colleagues. You need to narrow your topic down or else you will drown. So have a close look at the literature and pick a focused topic (pick one star in the universe instead of covering the universe), and particularly a topic you will find exciting. It is always good to ask yourself a question to base your research on, e.g., “what makes a cardiac cell contract”, “why do different organisms age differently”, “what function does protein X have in disease Y” etc.
I agree with the comments above, but want to add one more point. That point for me is one of the first steps towards finding a research topic, which is the position of your institution towards the subjects. That is, the laboratory opportunities present in the labs. You should keep in mind that working in a not up-to-date laboratory may make you dislike the topic in these first years. So, try firstly to find those labs that are good enough for you to make your research. After narrowing down these labs and the equipments present there, start looking for the best match between your topic of interest and the opportunities present in your institution.

I agree with your statements, but I fail to agree with your idea of browsing over 2013 articles. As 3rd year student, he firstly has to go over the review articles of recent years (2010-2014), since they cover the main research studies done on the topic for a given period of time. It will save him some time, and also will be more helpful than detailed research articles due to its easier language in my honest opinion.
If you are at preliminary stage i will suggest , go for simple one such as homology modeling or phylogeny analysis .You can start reading paper from bioinformation.net. In this site you will get some easy one about bioinformatics....
Please, dont fall into the trap of shooting from the hip...this is not a discouragement, but an advice to take careful aim. Writing a paper worth its bit, is not easy, and always remember the responsibility that goes along with it. By what you publish, you add to existing literature that would be consulted by others in the field. A research paper is usually an outcome of a well thought out plan in a particular direction, with a view to solve a problem, it is not to be written because you just wish to write a paper. In case you do not have a supervisor in your University, you may find this difficult, and may have to wait till you finish your Btech, and start with an Mtech project. At this stage, you can probably only write a review, however, you do have an advantage in that a Bioinformatics paper can be written with just analyses in silico. There are a huge lot of comparisons you can make with existing database information, but then for a good worthwhile interpretation, you need to know what you are talking about, and that needs considerable thought and local discussion. A forum discussion can certainly help, but you need to have people around you with whom you can discuss and move ahead. I am happy about your enthusiasm, and hence, do not misunderstand what I have said, but you need to do work, and then a paper will come automatically.
Just for information, there are decent Journals which would accept papers from Undergarduate projects. It is to be entirely written by the student who is corresponding author. Best part is it is free, I guess to encourage budding scientists.
Keep up your enthusiasm. As other experts recommended, try to find a decent topic which you really feel like investigating and there you go... Good Luck. Few areas in the interphase of Biotech/Bioinfo like novel Bioinformatics tools, Comparative genomics etc... can definitely help you learn more while you research further on your selcted area. Hope this helps.
