All of these methods that have been posted are very good and effective; I will offer another one here:
Water shock method: Suspend blood in 9 mL of sterile water and mix for 10-12 seconds. After incubation, add 1 mL of 10x PBS. This method works very well, is quick, and can be scaled up for more volume of blood. Amonium chloride (NH4Cl) buffers work very well, but I would suggest diluting them out after lysis is complete to stop the reaction.
