I need a fluorescent dye which is soluble in water. However, I am yet to come across something which is suitable. I would be using the dye to see the behaviour of aqueous solutions in a porous medium to see the individual and combined effect of capillary action and gravity.
Fluorescein and rhodamine are commercially available fluorescent dyes. However, fluorescent dyes can be synthesized using simple synthetic methods in laboratory scale. The below articles may help you@ Sourabh Paul

Fluorescein is a very inexpensive fluorescent dye that is soluble in water as long as the pH is adjusted to 6 or higher. However, you should be aware that its fluorescence is easily bleached by exposure to light. Its peak excitation wavelength is about 490 nm.

8-Hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (also called pyranine) is another inexpensive, water-soluble dye with a similar excitation wavelength to fluorescein. Its fluorescence will also be bleached if exposed to bright light too long.
