I am still new in SPSS. If I wanted to include this question: 'How many students are in your classes, by gender?' as a variable/variables, do I need to compute 'students', 'classes' and 'gender' separately?
I am not particularly sure because there are a minimum of 3 classes; and each class has a maximum number of 24 students (boys and girls). I'm getting more and more confused.
Your help is appreciated.

Yes, you can do this and name the relevant variable as "class", why not? After you can do many things with them as numeric values. Otherwise you can label them as A,B,C... and define a string variable with the name "class" where you will directly put the value A or B or C ... It depends on the analysis that you are going to perform later.
Well if i understand your question well.
1- generate variable "Number of students in ur class"
2- generate variable "gender"
3- cross tab (row: classes and Column: gender )

@Fatima, look a sample file. You can add more variables and explore the description of the existing variables.
I agree with Demetris as he said that you can add more variables and explore the description of the variables entered. At a later stage you will be able to conduct correlation and regression analysis and all other required tests.

Fatimah, do you have access to any books on SPSS? There are several ones which are quite easy to assist you in your first attempts! My favorite is SPSS Survival Manual by Julie Pallant. There is also an SPSS Basics via Pyrczak Publishing. I know Pallant's book is available for download to Kindle. Maybe that would help?

you should first create 3 columns like this picture(No.1).
Also you can add some description in variable view page( bottom left corner).
Then you can analysis your data using analysis menu in top of the page.

Adding to the very useful feedbacks in this discussion, once you have all data entered into SPSS worksheet, do run preliminary data analysis (PDA) prior to any other stats tests. This include data screening, normality etc.
