I want to continuously separate a relatively big cation molecule (methyl viologen) in an alkaline (pH ~12) aqueous flow with a flow rate about 3000 micro-mole/min of target molecule. I'm wondering which one works best, a cation exchange membrane or a filtration system based on size? Can I use other ways like magnetic beads?

The problem with the latter is that I have other big molecules like glucose and hydroxyl acids, and the problem with the former is that I have other cations e.g. K or Na.

Membrane is not my field and I have a fundamental question about it. Is it possible for a cation exchange membrane to separate a perpendicular flow through it? People always use these membranes parallel to the flow e.g. batteries, fuel cells but I couldn't find any paper or book that says we cannot use a flow perpendicular to the membrane.

Which parameters are the most important in selecting a membrane or filter when I don't have any potential field like electrodes?
