With the expansion of Aedes-borne diseases, such as Dengue and Chikungunya, there would be also concern about Mayaro and Zika viruses in countries such as Colombia.
Thanks Dr. Guzmán-Blanco, as I mentioned in my question, I am aware of the studies in Venezuela, published in EID. Hoever, do you know studies in other neighbor countries?
Patricia Aguilar from UTMB has been doing studies and follow ups for the past couple of years in Peru I believe - if you want a more updated opinion on MAYV epidemiology in that region you could contact her.
Her UTMB profile page (http://www.utmb.edu/pathology/faculty/bios/Aguilar.asp) lists this as her e-mail - [email protected]. I don't think the latest work is published yet but if you have general questions on the status of MAYV in Peru, I'm sure she can help.
So far we diagnosed MAYV infections in returning travellers from Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Suriname, French Guiana and Peru. Colombia is still missing in the list but I am sure with improved clinical vigilance we will be able to detect more in European travellers. Usually we work with those clinical samples for more "In depth" studies.
