Actually we have a lot of discussions how research based learning pushes the interest in sustainability. In our project laboratory of chemistry it seems as if the students are activated to get engaged into sustainability research when they have the possibility for research based learning. In my experience the answer to your question is: YES! The idea of sustainability is by its own nature directly correlated to research based learning, in a multidisciplinary mode that inspires collaborations from a variety of disciplines. In the early 2000s I coordinated a graduate program (Master of Science in sustainable systems - MS3) at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and the research based learning was the driving force to foster sustainability in this curriculum.
