We grow human/mouse cell lines in culture (HeLa, HEK293, MEFs) in the absence of antibiotics. We regularly stain cells on coverslips with DAPI to test for mycoplasma. Lately we have seen what appears to be a contaminant, visible by phase contrast at 10-20X as small black dots that stain positive for DAPI and increase in number with time but are really only evident after 3 or more days in culture. This clearly seems to be contamination and likely mycoplasma but of a sort I have not seen before as they seem to grow so slowly. Anyone recognize this contaminant from this description?
