Are there any peaks present in the XPS spectrum of C 1s, around 276 eV and 274 eV? In some carbon functionalized H-TiO2 sample, we found some prominent peaks, positioned around 276-274 eV, to come in the C1s XPS spectrum. But these were not present in the adventitious carbon XPS spectrum. Can someone please elucidate on this matter? What are the modern findings?
Are you using Chlorine? Are there impurities like Re or Os? They can give peaks at the region you specified.
Another option is peak shift. It is possible that the C1s peak can shift. Then you need to offset it.
It is difficult to have C1s peak at 276-274 eV. Compare with respect to other elements.

I think you should calibrate the instrument before taking the spectra or else you can use pure Au sample and check how much shift is there. Add the value according to that.
Ya, it was pretty surprising! I had checked several database but did find nothing.
The X-ray source was Mg Ka. There was no material like Os or Re. The reference peak (prominent) was located at 285.6 eV, little shifted.
Is there any relation with Auger electrons?
Auger spectra of C KLL shows peak around 230-270 eV based on the chemical bonding present in the material. In your case, apart from 274 eV peak( if it is due to AES), you should get the primary peak for your composite at 284 eV. Did you get that peak?

Ya, the main peak due to C-C bonding appeared around 285.6 eV, a bit shifted ( I assume the 284.8 eV peak to be the reference carbon peak). On deconvolution, the C=O, O-C=O related peaks were also found.
As it was already indicated by Justin, if your source is without monochromator, then you will get a main X-ray satellite shifted by 8.4 eV. The main C1s peak at 285.6 - 8.4 = 277.2 eV. Otherwise you must have the carbon bond with fluorine, they are at about 277 eV.
This sounds like a clear case of satellite structure from an achromatic source - which you have with a Mg anode.
The peaks will be approximately 9 eV from another peak (eg 285 C1s will have a peak around 275 eV) which will be of much smaller intensity of the parent peak.
You will see this on ALL your peaks so it is easy to confirm in for example a survey scan between 1200 and -5 eV

You can check the satellite by switching to the AlKa Anode: If the structure stays in binding energy you have something real, if it shifts by 1.4 and 1.7 eV ins a satellite from the non monochromated source, and the satellite structure will be a little bit lower in intensity for AlKa w.r. to the main C1s line. If the structure is shifted by 233 eV ist an Auger.
