Some recent studies measures the risk/benefit and safety assessment of polyphenol consumption. Contrary to popular belief, taking too much polyphenols (including tea) may not be beneficial but rather harmful as these studies points out to the fact that excessive consumption of tea during pregnancy may be associated with elevated risk of childhood malignancy (Plichart et al (2008), Wang & Jiang (2008)). Besides, Luoise et al (2005) enumerated the carcinogenic/genotoxic effects of polyphenols.

Many of us consume tea/coffee on average of 3-4 cups per day which may not be of great concern. But what about others who take excessive tea without being informed about the harmful effects of polyphenols?
