Communication is the process through which relationships are instituted, sustained, altered, or ended by increases or reductions in meaning. What with electronic mail, face-to-face interactions, phone calls, instant messaging, video conferences, and social media, a phenomenal amount of communication takes place in organizations day in, day out, often late in the night. If it is not to exacerbate information overload, digital signage must be meaningful, and so spring from purpose, which will take some doing in most organizations. The principles of strategic communication that digital signage—much as any other medium—must espouse are continuity, credibility, dialogue, integration, precision, results-orientation, ubiquity, and understanding. The rest, however important, is detail.
