I am trying to do a transient analysis of wall structure (Steel Posts + Aluminium Panels) in ANSYS. For damping I have a value of logarithmic decrement 0.05. Could anyone tell me how I can use this value in ANSYS? Or can anybody suggest alternatives to this procedure?
What damping are you talking about? in elastic range? or due to plastic damage? damping in metals is mostly due to plasticity. Thus material law should suffice for capturing the damping or energy absorption. If there is another source for energy absorption, like friction or contact or gap or anything else, it is better to model it more explicitly than using phenomenological damping models.
By damping I mean the one regarding the overall dynamic response of the structure (within elastic range). From some literature I found that range of overall damping of civil engineering structures to be around 0.05 (critical damping ratio). I want to impose it in my model in ANSYS and obtain the response. I used Rayleigh Damping (as in literature suggested by Aria Tsam) but I could not find means to verify it. I would be grateful if you could suggest some alternatives or something else in this approach.
