Does anyone know of a published experiment of Side Population (SP) analysis using a dye other than PI or 7-AAD for dead cell exclusion?
We are using Fixable Viability Dyes from eBioscience, they work great.

We frequently use Life Technologies' Trypan Blue Solution, 0.4% (Cat#15250061) to exclude dead cell count.
Hoechst 33342 (Life Technologies, Cat# H1399)has also been widely used as a nucleic acid stain is a popular cell-permeant nuclear counterstain that emits blue fluorescence when bound to dsDNA. This dye is often used to distinguish condensed pycnotic nuclei in apoptotic cells and for cell cycle studies in combination with BrdU.
I am sharing a combined file from articles published in Blood 2006 and Exp Eye Res 2006 in that area.
Why not use UV excitation with PI? The PI result from 350nm excitation in 610nm excitation is so bright,that you can exclude that in all of your other laser lines. Even together with the traditional excitation lines used together with 350nm for Side Population.

I think you probably missed something on the question. It seems to me that Adam is well aware of using PI. He wanted to get some other possible ways for dead cell exclusion apart from PI and 7-AAD.
