While Bluetongue is infectious, it is not necessarily contagious. Bluetongue is rarely seen in dogs and oftentimes the results of infections (from reported literature) appears to be as a result of eating infected meat/meat products. In the US Bluetongue and enzootic hemorrhagic disease (simultaneous terminology) is associated with Deer, it stands to reason that a method of infection for canines (rural area canines, hunting canines) could be chewing or eating on a deer carcass so infected.
