To attempt the reconstruction of events in historical periods for which we have little documentation (both documentary sources and/or material sources) it is often necessary to introduce complementary hypotheses. Is artificial intelligence capable of constructing hypotheses consistent with the matrix of (few) data available? I'm not sure.

I think that with artificial intelligence, history will not only be a matter of documentation, but also of the methodology of reading events with all the various data that artificial intelligence can provide.

A month ago, a colleague and I played around with ChatGPT, asking it questions about me and about my research field (Revolutionary and Napoleonic France). The answers it provided seemed plausible enough (to the less informed), but when we sought to verify the information (like who is currently working on specific topics of my field), it turned out everything was made up. It also listed me as winning a major award (which I have done), but it completely made up a non-existent award (with a cash prize). As it stands now, I wouldn't trust anything generated by AI.
