Thank you for your clarification. All generalizations suffer from the fact there will always be exceptions. Take students at Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc. Lazy will be dismissed and are inadmissible to begin with.

I know what you are trying to say. The advances in technology has collected the information in their finger tips. Before you had to work hard and look around to get it, so the students are idling a bit, but still need to read a lot to understand the material. So, yes, they appear to be idling in comparison to ourselves when we were students.

Sorry I am not agree with you . Yes these are not the famous for hardworking universities but also highly branded ones ! Where are they credits of the branded universities to produces good students from good incumbents or applicant with excellent results ! If raw materials are good then the finished products will be good , its very normal case. Credit are there when you can make good students from motivated, lag behind and weak students in the junior class !

In case of Bangladesh, Textile and Ready-made Garment Science, Fashion Design of RMG sector is world famous which hardworking is not less than other renowned universities of the world.

So, hardworking is not limited only Oxford, Harvard, MIT, Cambridge. Its everywhere depending situations.

I DO NOT AGREE THAT STUDENTS ARE LAZY NOW A DAYS.

Their brains are working with far more concentration and for more time than our time. In all the online activities they engage 10- 16 hours daily require involvement of deep concentration. They are not lazy.

We gave them a self destructing weapon in the name of toy.

My niece was admitted in one engineering college of southern part of India where mobile phone is kept inactive for both students, teachers and stuffs inside the institution from 10 AM to 7 PM. Nobody is allowed to go outside the college campus during the time. Provisions of food etc. are there inside the campus. Everybody have to enter or exit the college by college vehicle only.

Like almost all of her friends, her academic result changed dramatically towards positive site.

EVERY COLLEGE AUTHORITY may consider it.

These days students are smarter than our age

The students were lazy, not curious and always fond of entertainment all the time. Read at least François Villon poems. Nothing has changed during the past 550 years. However, it can be understood, as they are young. From my point of view there are no bad students - there are unprofessional teachers. It is necessary to channel some of this young energy into the right direction. This is a task of professor.

Why to tag only poor students? With the rise of technology and its introduction in our day-to-day life, has made everyone lazy. People actually don't even get up to switch on/off their TV's, but use remotes. Instead of going out for shopping, we buy things online.

Technology, yes, undoubtedly has helped us grow, but also has made us dependent.

Maybe over use of technology makes them tired or too tired to even move!

Students may be lazy for the reasons you mention, but we must also consider our performance as teachers:

• Are we motivating them enough?
• Are we allowing free thinking and self-learning?
• We are stimulating your creativity and ability to innovate and generate new knowledge?
• Are we using the best strategies, methods and techniques to promote student learning?
• We already abandoned the chair and the informative teaching that only stimulates the memory?

In the honest answer as teachers to these questions, there is the solution to interest and motivate our students, so that we can promote their learning and that it is meaningful; that is, to learn for life not only for the classroom and to pass exams.

Reward is not associated with academic success in the lower grades where character is formed. Content is not relative to the student. Answers are rapidly appearing on line in hand held devices.

Poor teacher-centred approaches instead of learner-centred approaches coupled with the failure in offering great coaching skills to students (motivation of students to discover new knowledge) have been the bane behind the abysmal performances of students.

There was a time when successful individuals in the world of academia took great pride in their achievements and were offered well paid positions in different sectors of the community. Academic qualifications and meritocracy were great standards for filling a professional position. Consequently, such opportunities created an excellent incentive for students to go ahead with their studies and reach the highest rung of the academic ladder. These days, things have changed and having a rich academic background for finding a prestigious job is not enough because other forces are at work. Notably, laziness and cowardice are the reasons why so great a portion of mankind have stopped pursuing their dreams in the academic world. The main reason is that the wealth of technological achievements has made people not to trouble themselves because they think that there are others who will easily undertake the irksome works for them.

In my opinion, laziness is a positive quality. A wise man must be lazy. It saves him against unnecessary effort. When it comes to the vital interests - laziness usually disappears.

They spend more time in social media, as well they loss the soul of competition.

Absence of motivation

Dear Mr Zafar, your question is provoking. Do you have proof of your theorem? I was taught that the reason that students are not top performing is us, teachers and researchers. Let me give you an example. Students in the Netherlands hardly ever meet their professor. In most London Universities for example students see their professors at least 24 hours a week or a lot more. Students need us as examples/ role models, for disseminating knowledge, performing practicals, discussing research articles and studying etc. All the best, Carl

Some students are poorly prepared from the previous part of their studies. If they do not complete their knowledge immediately, they do not understand what it is learning. In that case, it is not laziness, but only "despair". The teacher can not constantly repeat (teach) elementary knowledge only. He must "go on".
