Why salt is important while CrossLink Reversal?

For formaldehyde Protein−DNA crosslink reversal, high temperature and high salt concentration were both important. What is the function of NaCl in the process of crosslink reversal? Can I reverse the protein-DNA cross-link by only high temperature?
