There are many microarray studies that investigate gene expression alterations in different viral infections using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). While this approach seems to be workable for systemic viral infections, studying the alterations in the expression of host genes and proteins due to local viral infections using PBMCs is not very clear and seems not to be an accurate representation of in vivo situations.
