A lot of studies that test the antibiotic susceptibility of doxycycline, tetracycline and minocycline against the acne causing bacteria C. acnes, usually obtain a higher proportion of bacteria that are resistant to doxycycline.
But if these 3 antibiotics have the same mechanism of action, then shouldn't the antibiotic resistance be somewhat similar for all 3?

The reason for the difference in antibiotic susceptibility patterns of C. acnes may be attributed to the different antibiotic prescribing habits, different drug availability, different patients’ ethnicities, and different C. acnes phylogenetic strains. Please refer to the article attached below.

I'm wondering though if the antibiotic resistance gene for doxycycline already exists in a bacterial population, and we test the susceptibility of tetracycline using the disc diffusion assay for these bacteria, then would we not expect them to exhibit a similar pattern of resistance to tetracycline (despite tetracycline not being as commonly prescribed)?
