Nice question ... with a bad answer. Yes, it is possible to go futher "standard models" but it is really hard. In a bibliometrics-ruled world, true innovation hardly find its place because it does not fit the urge for rapid, easy, massive publishing. That also a reason why applied papers are more popular than fundamental research : easier and faster publication. Conventional wisdom, Galbraith would say.

I think it is a kind of self - trap...
My guess is the mathematical formulation of the standard model gives it an aura of trustworthiness. And its construction begins a set of postulates about a set of symmetries. And then, for example, one can observe the following: The natural Higgs field (grey square) breaks the electroweak symmetry and interacts with other particles to give them mass (see attached image).
A very rough explanation that I can give is this one:
*As human beings we have the need of security guarantee in our lifes, so we are always seeking to find a standard way to obtain such a security. See for example the concept of Confidence Interval: there exist so much discussion about it, but it is being used routinely every day at every new article.
@Demetris, have a look in the standard model application at CERN! Through many experiments, the Standard Model has become established as a well-tested physics theory. Good reading!

Great post! The URL you gave is very helpful in pointing out the weakness of the standard model (i.e., gravity is not part of the SM). Also, there is also the need to check the SM to see if its current form or its extension can predict Higgs boson.
