I'm having a real issue with a fluorine contamination. It's a stainless steel vacuum reactor with a plate electrode one end that we generate plasma in using RF. The vessel is pumped down using an Edward rotary pump containing Edwards ultragrade 19 oil. For surfaces that I air plasma (corona) treat, XPS is telling us that the surface has around 40-60 % fluorine on the surface. I've scrubbed out the reactor several times (just water or detergent), change the majority of the Viton seals and have change the oil.There is a teflon plate behind the electrode which act as an insulator for the electrode. That was my initial suspect, but I've been told that due to the high melting point of teflon, that if the Teflon was being sputtered off due to shorting or something, there would be visible char marks. No one else is using the chamber for any F containing samples. Anyone have any ideas as to where the F could be coming from? Have I been given bad advice about the teflon insulator?
