In an industrial furnace, we use graphite heating elements, and therefore the electrodes are also made of graphite. However, the connection to the furnace is made of water-cooled copper. At the interface, there is a piece of molybdenum. What is the purpose of this molybdenum piece? Why not connect the copper directly to the graphite?

Different coefficient of thermal expansion. Upon cooling, the joint may break, since the coefficients of thermal expansion of copper and graphite differ. Molybdenum is a buffer.
