Why in treatment of beta thalassemia the mutation in beta globin gene cannot be corrected by gene editiing?

In treatment of beta-thalassemia, we introduce a mutation to the alpha-globin gene or its enhancer rather directly correcting the mutation in the beta-globin gene.
