Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) indicates the ability of the body to combat oxidative stress. In my work with patients suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease, TAC values are found to be low in patients in initial stages of CKD. But surprisingly the TAC values are found to be higher than controls in advanced stages (CKD stage 4 &5). Could the uremic status contribute to this increase?
