In most systematic reviews and meta-analysis in dentistry it is always concluded that clear conclusions can not be obtained because of the high heterogeneity of the studies. Is there any way to counteract or diminish this heterogeneity? How can one or several studies be heterogeneous?

As I read the heterogeneity of studies in systematic reviews and meta-analysis is inevitable and according to the Chrocrane Handbook you measure the heterogeneity according to what I2 analysis expresses. But if I will always have heterogeneity in the studies then ... why I make systematic reviews and meta-analysis if I will always finish the same thing?
