It is also appropriate to copy edit and proof your publications before they come out for public consumption. The responsibility of the subject editor is to ensure the facts in the publication are right; while the language editor ensure that there are no lexical, syntactical or mechanical error in the publication. My opinion is, the responsibilities of the 2 editors are important, and it should be mandatory for every publication to go through these processes.

For the purpose of achieving cooperation between the author and publisher on the work created, and within the conditions of the publishing process, the editor and the language editor have a role in achieving this cooperation, which will reflect on the issue of organizational and creative skills and ensure the rights of publishing within the public line of the Publisher.

A good researcher and scholar cannot be a know all. In most occasions, the bolts of our research buildings must be tightened. This task is best carried out by subject and language editors. Subject editors nourish the content of the book and makes sure it agrees with the theoretical constructs in the field. Language editors improves the state of the written language and makes sure it conforms to its rubrics in grammar, spelling and so forth. The QUALITY of publications are enhanced by these editors. A good researcher will make their services mandatory.

From personal experience (e.g., publishing 20 books) the issues you are discussing vary by publisher, and sometimes the type of book (authored versus an edited collection in which you also write a chapter). Typically, if you work with a larger press with a better reputation, they provide the editing services. Sometimes, they provide very extensive editing services. EG., we recently published a book with University of California Press, and they edited the manuscript more than once, and as I recall, between editing and responding to edits, the whole manuscript was edited three times before publication. Some publishers offer those services for a fee. My position on the latter is -- shop your manuscript to multiple publishers and get a better deal -- that is, find one who will edit the manuscript.
