Both normal ( Conventional )and Real time PCR are both in vitro polymerase chain reaction assay of Cytomegalovirus ( CMV) DNA in human plasma or whole blood.
Normal PCR vs Real time PCR
In normal or conventional method, measurement of amplicon is based on end point qualitative analysis with usual error due to post DNA handling. Therefore it is not usually recommended for CMV quantitative assay.
Real time PCR on the other hand measures the accumulation of amplicons as the reaction progresses in real time with the quantification at the end of each cycle. This for most times give the exact concentration of CMV particle in a given sample of plasma or whole blood.
