In our experience, Wistar rats are suitable for induction of Type 1 diabetes by way of STZ injection. SD rats, however, are better for induction of obesity induced Type 2 diabetes, though the gold standard is C57BL6J.

Wistar and SD both rat strains are being used. These rats are lower in cost, reasonable size for sample blood and organ sample collection, easy to maintain because of their tranquil behavior and widely available in the world. These are some of the reasons. I am also agreed that SD rats is better for T2D model than T1D.
