Prior research articles incorporating silica nanoparticles into the polyamide layer of a thin film composite reverse osmosis membrane state that they are able to disperse silica nanoparticles in both aqueous and n-hexane solutions during interfacial polymerization via ultrasonication for 20-60 min. After trying this, I have found that the nanoparticles disperse in the aqueous solution before aggregating while on the surface of the PSF membrane support layer. I have observed that they aggregate immediately when mixed with the n-hexane. I have tried both non-modified silica and amine-functionalized silica that are stored in an ethanol dispersion. Does it have to do with the pH of the solutions? Temperature? Should a surfactant be included? Any help that can be provided would be much appreciated.
