I think 1mm space above and below is perfect, as long as it is consistent between experiments. I use many different Transwell and snapwell inserts, and have different electrodes for each experiment.

Dear Florencia,

if you have experienced proper cell attachment of MSCs with certain ECM coatings that serve your experiment use the same coating for the membrane in cell culture inserts.

For some cell types to attach, membrane material matters as well. Testing microporous membranes made from PC or PET (pore density 10exp8/cm²) might help as well. I recommend to use the Endohm chambers when available. Chopstick electrodes will work for sure. With Chopstick electrodes however, the results are often subject to fluctuations.
