In our lab we would like to buy a new plate reader that should be able to do the following:
- reading 96 well plates
- reading in visual wavelengths (Lowry and Bradford protein assays, ELISA, MTS,...)
- time resolved fluorescence (for Europium release assays in assessing cytolytic immune effector function)
- luminescence
Favoured extras:
- quantifying DNA/RNA in small volumes (UV light)
I would value your opinion on which readers fulfill these criteria and how good they are for everyday-use.
We recently purchased florescence spectrometer (chemi/bio luminescence, florescence can be measured here) and a plate reader accessory for UV-Vis (as we can have wide range of wavelengths). I didn't play a lot yet but these are from Agilent technologies (Cary Varian clubbed with this). As you can say , these are not imaging but for spectral measurements! As an add-on- these are pretty much user friendly!
We use BMG Labtech's Fluostar Omega for BCA assays and single- and dual-luciferase assays. It can read plates up to 384 wells, has two pumps for liquid delivery, and can do UV/VIS absorption, luminescence, and fluorescence. It has excellent software for acquisition and analysis and can be programmed for complicated kinetic timecourse experiments or endpoint assays.
BioTek Synergy readers are excellent in my view. They are really user friendly too.
