The infantilization period in first language acquisition provides us with natural evidence showing why comprehension skills like listening and reading should precede productive skills such as speaking and writing. Since writing requires one's use of words and structures for expressing ideas , one needs to boost his/her knowledge of language before actually engaging in speech production.
each of us is unique and has different learning abilities, some will prefer listening and others will prefer to write, that's why I think that every method is important and good... provided it works
I think it depends on many other factors such as age, learning style, amount of time available, affective factors, learner's goals, social & political issues which may make aural/oral & F2F communication possible or hinders it to a great extent, etc.
