At present I am using the reinforcement particles in stir casting of Aluminium composites. I preheat the reinforcement to a temperature of 250 °C. As suggested in some relevant authors conclude heating to 600 °C causes oxidation of SiC. I would like to know what will be the effect if reinforcement heated to 400 °C.
Reinforcements are preheated for two reasons first to remove moisture and secondly to make compatible with molten aluminum . Generally ceramic particles are not easily oxidized at 600 but its fine to use 400

You must be more accurate to defined the type of the reinforcement you will use in your work as the temperature of heating of the reinforcement is effective in increase the Wettability between the reinforcement and matrix. but to be sure i advice to start with 200C and try to see the Wettability of fabricated composite and then increase the temperature up to the degree you achieve the optimum with lowest oxidation

Pre-heat temperature of ceramic particles affect the wettability but its hard to distinguish in this narrow range. Its better to check with 200 and 600 .

As said by one of the viewers in this column pre heating of reinforcements
is done for 2 reasons. 1. to remove moisture and other contaminants-200 to 250deg C
is quite ok for this 2. Heating the SiC reinforcement to 600 deg C will not do any harm to it but when exposed to Al matrix it can attract oxide formation on the skin which may affect its compatibility leaving the reinforcement isolated. Pre heating to 350-400 deg C can be tried for effective result. Pl revert
