For the developing countries the most relevant are: a) the usual challenge: long-term landfills impact; b) the new challenge: e-waste disposal and recycling

The increasing gap between the few affluent rich and the poor is getting deeper and deeper. Therefore, landfills have become a modest (yet steady) source of income for many people in the developing world, where they go every day to scavenge for something that can be re-used, sold, or recycled.

Dear this is a smart question that should be answered in multidimensional way based on the solid waste treatment methods. The challenges in developing countries may include:

1. Lack of Municipal waste reuse, recycling and cleaner production

implementations

2. Lack of standard policy

3. Lack of Waste management technologies

4. Lack of Capital and know how

5. Lack of awareness

6. Lack of damping sites

7. Lack of good governance

8. Lack of public commitment

I agree with Mr. Zerga's answer, but I think the problem has different levels in each particular country. In Brazil since 2010 there is a clever National Policy of Solid Waste that established the foundations for a descentralized rational waste management. The problem is that in the mecanism of command and control there is a lack of control that compromise to put the public policy into effect. Mainly it is due to the imediatist way of making politics, where the long term is beyond the horizon of next election for politicians.

Non uniformity in application of national waste management laws.

Awareness and ascription of responsibility among citizens and industry against improper waste disposal.

Mammoth population is major challenge for waste (More no. more consumption and more waste generation results more pollution).

Estrategies as Integrated solid waste manegement are considered a priority but are not applied.

In general, zero waste or waste recovery and valorization are considered important, but the context conditions generate better conditions for collection or final disposal.

Informal recycling is an option that needs to be analysed and and considered by local goverments and society

Low utilization and unscientific dumping of solid wastes resulting in leachate generation. It is a great threat in context of heavy metal mobility to soil and water sources in the vicinity.

Indeed it is an excellent question. Being a waste management person from a developing country, I have seen what are the actual problems. I second Vitalii Ishchenko in some way. In my opinion the following are the biggest issues -

1. Lack of source segregation.

2. Lack of awareness.

3. Lack of proper monitoring.

4. Absence of waste inventory.

5. Ignorance of the officials and people.

6. Social barriers are high in some places.

7. Sticking to the linear economy model.

As, Mr. Vitalii Ishchenko mentioned that e-waste is a new problem and the health impacts are not clear to those who are handling it in a crude way.

Depuis juillet 2015, le Liban a connu une crise de gestion des déchets avec des conséquences désastreuses aux niveaux de la santé et de l'environnement. Les causes du problème actuel comprennent le favoritisme politique et l'absence de planification à long terme; tandis que ses conséquences comprennent des sites d'enfouissement non autorisés et des sites d'incinération à proximité des zones habitées, ce qui ajoute à la gravité de la situation.

En l'absence de toute solution durable, le problème de l'accumulation des déchets a atteint un stade critique affectant la santé des citoyens (libération de toxines, contamination des aliments, fuite dans les sources d'eau et de nourriture, pollution de l'eau) et ce jusqu’ à ce jour (2018).

the most chalange is the old technologies that are used and lack of aknlogement in invironmental field and sustainability due to low economic possibilities of these developing countries
