Already at low temperatures, e.g., room temperature, platinum oxide, which is thermodynamically not stable is reduced by gaseous hydrogen. Oxygen chemisorbed on metallic platinum is also rapidly removed by contact with gaseous hydrogen. Hydrogenation will be over metallic platinum.
Adams' catalyst, also known as platinum dioxide,PtO2•H2O. It is a catalyst for for hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, dehydrogenation, and oxidation reactions. During the reaction, platinum metal (platinum black) is formed which has been cited to be the active catalyst.
